Pay attention to the oil warning light staying on after start-up, a dipstick reading that shows oil which is black, gritty, or noticeably below the minimum mark, and any new metallic tapping or knocking noise from the engine — especially when cold. The Lifetime Oil Myth — Debunked

A number of vehicles were once marketed with lifetime fill or no oil change needed claims, particularly for transmissions and differentials. In real-world use, no oil lasts forever. Even premium full-synthetic engine oil undergoes thermal breakdown, acidification, and contamination from metallic particles over time. There is no such thing as oil that never needs changing. Skipping even one service can allow sludge to form, restricting oil flow to critical components and setting the stage for a catastrophic — and very expensive — engine failure.
